Land consolidation, irrigation, and zoning – the formula for working agriculture

Sustainable agriculture is impossible without land consolidation, modern irrigation, and clear zoning. This was stated by Nikolay Minev, CEO of Agrion, in an interview for the special edition of Manager magazine, "First in Business." According to him, the main structural problem in the sector is the fragmentation of land.

According to him, the main structural problem in the sector is the fragmentation of land. There are over 3,500,000 agricultural plots in Bulgaria, often inherited and with unresolved documentation. This blocks the market and makes farming inefficient, regardless of the scale of production.

Irrigation remains the second critical factor. Of the 11 million decares of irrigated land in the past, less than 5% are currently in operation. In the context of climate change, this leads to unpredictable yields and pressure on profitability.

Agro-ecological zoning provides a scientific basis for selecting crops according to the territory. Its absence maintains a model of monocultural production with low added value and leads to a paradox. Bulgaria remains a net importer of staple foods.
